It is important to know what types of import and export businesses there are out there. While it’s obvious that there are import businesses and export businesses, there are a wide variety of different variations on this same basic theme. The first type of import and export business that you may want to consider is the EMC.

Export Management Company

EMC: An EMC is an Export Management Company, and this type of company is responsible for handling export operations for a local or domestic company that is interested in selling its products internationally but that does not know how to do it, or perhaps has no interest in knowing how to do it. The Export Management Company is responsible for handling everything, including hiring the dealers, hiring the distributors, hiring the representatives, handling the advertising, the marketing and promotions, overseeing the marking and the packaging, arranging for the shipping and sometimes even arranging for the financing. In some of the cases, you will find that the Export Management Company will take a title for the goods, meaning that the Export Management Company is actually the distributor for the goods as well.

You are going to want to keep in mind that a Export Management Company is generally going to specialize in some way. For example, the Export Management Company may specialize by the product, by the foreign market or by both things. The only exception to this rule is when the Export Management Company takes the title to the product, in which case they are generally either paid on a commission basis, paid on a salary basis or paid on both a retainer and commission basis.

This is just one of the types of important and export businesses that is available to you. You should explore all of your options when trying to choose the right type of import or export business for your needs.
